The largest municipality in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. It is centrally located in the Setúbal Peninsula, nestled between three of the most important national protected areas: the Arrábida Natural Park, the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve, and the Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve, as well as two estuaries and the mountain range.
The municipality is composed of four parishes: Palmela, Pinhal Novo, Quinta do Anjo, and the union of parishes Poceirão and Marateca.
