Barreiro is part of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, standing out for its strategic location on the southern bank of the Tagus and its connections to Lisbon via the 25 de Abril and Vasco da Gama bridges. With an industrial and transport heritage, it has evolved into a dynamic urban centre, preserving its heritage and riverside areas.

The municipality comprises the Union of Parishes of Alto do Seixalinho, Santo André and Verderena; Barreiro and Lavradio; Palhais and Coina; and the Parish of Santo António da Charneca.

Traditions

Its traditional festivals, such as the Maritime Traditions Showcase, and cultural events like MAPS, offer live music and unique experiences.

The Festas do Barreiro, in August, celebrate local culture with music, dance, crafts, and gastronomy, featuring concerts, food stalls, and entertainment. Highlights include the Quinhentista Fair of Coina and OUT.FEST.
